My diploma project is a demo of a point-and-click video game set in a fantasy world. In developing the visual style, I aimed to evoke the atmosphere of classic adventure novels and retro role-playing games. The story is presented in the form of a visual novel, exploring themes of responsibility, power hierarchies, and self-destruction through dialogue. The game is played from a first-person perspective. The player experiences the story through the protagonist’s eyes and can influence his actions through their choices. The protagonist is a young boy. In a traumatic incident, he blinds his younger sister: he sneaks out at night to read her astronomy books, and during a mental breakdown, he sets her room on fire. Unable to face what he has done, he invents a monster and convinces himself that the creature is responsible. He tells this story to others as well, then sets out on a quest to hunt it down. His first task is to escape a city located in a toxic wasteland. To do so, he needs a durable filter mask. Lacking money and materials, he seeks help from those around him. However, all of his interactions are overshadowed by the threatening presence and authority of his father, a general—power that the boy is inclined to exploit for his own benefit. After obtaining the necessary mask with the help of a blacksmith, he puts it on before leaving the city. He does not realize that the helmet bears a surreal resemblance to his father’s.
