The topic of my project, entitled Machifuda – A Hanafuda Rethought with Global Cities, was the redesign of the traditional Japanese card game Hanafuda. The 48 cards of the redesign, named Machifuda, feature illustrations of 12 countries and their associated global cities. The holidays and colors associated with each card help to interpret the rules. The cards can be played according to the classic rules (e.g., Koi-Koi, Hana-Awase), but they also offer a new experience to the traditional visual symbol system.
